Anatomy: what the calf actually is
The calf is made of two muscles — the gastrocnemius, the larger muscle that crosses the knee, and the soleus, deeper and only crossing the ankle. Both point the foot downward (plantarflexion), but which one gets stretched most depends on whether the knee is straight or bent.
Why calves get tight
- Running. Repetitive push-off loads the calf hard, especially with sprinting or hill work.
- Footwear with a heel lift. Most sneakers and all high heels shorten the resting calf length over time.
- Standing for long periods. Sustained low-level tension throughout the day adds up.
